PICKY-UPPY When my granddaughter was age 3, she made two frequent requests of me. She would often ask, “Papaw, can I have some candy?” and Papaw, picky-uppy.” Given how life must have looked from the perspective of a 3-year old of very short stature and a heart problem, I was more than delighted to fulfill her requests. Now there may come a time when we outgrow the need for candy, but I don’t think we ever grow out of the need for “picky-uppy” - to be lifted up, raised up, hugged, supported, and made to feel secure in loving arms. And so it is that I can understand the Song of Thanksgiving that David sings (2 Samuel 22), having been lifted up and delivered by God from distress and danger. The images he uses of God are many: rock, refuge, fortress, deliverer, shield, stronghold, savior. David sings his story of deliverance: In my distress I call upon the Lord...From his temple he heard my Voice and my cry came to his ears...The Lord reached from on high; He took me and drew me out of the mighty waters… He brought me to a safe place...He strengthened me and set me secure on the heights. Wow! What a powerful description of “picky-uppy!” Whether David believed in an interventionist God who stoops down from heaven to pick him up or in a God who works through friends and family who are there when needed, he was thankful for the saving love that lifted him up to new heights, and he named that saving love GOD. I am thankful for the countless ways that God has been and continues to be at work in the life of the Argonia United Methodist Church to lift up those in need of a lift, those who cry out for a “picky-uppy.” Seeing what God has done and continues to do in and through his faith community makes me excited about the future that God has in store for us.
